The Man of the Millennium
His name is associated with
innovation, activity and courage. His idea is the foundation stone of
modern civilisation. As an entrepreneur he declared bankruptcy, he was
persecuted and driven out of town. Nevertheless, his invention affected
the whole world: Johannes Gensfleisch zum Gutenberg created the basis of
modern communication with his invention of printing with mobile letters.
Because of this outstanding achievement he was
recently elected by American journalists in the book "1000 Years
1000 People", as the "Man of the millennium".
In the year 2000, his 600th birthday was celebrated by the city of his birth, as his biography is connected
closely to Mainz. Today the tradition of the printed word lives on and
the culture of reading and books is highly developed and noticeable
everywhere in Mainz. The 100-year anniversary of the Gutenberg society
and the world museum of the art of printing, the Gutenberg Museum in the
year 2000, are
indications that the importance of Gutenberg's invention remains strong, even
in the age of digitalization.
